About this blog

Hi I’m Lara, BA (Hons), Grad Dip, PhD, CEO of This Charming Mum 😉

Three amazing little people call me Mum – Miss 5, Miss 3 and the Baby Boy – and I’m taking a break from professional life to prioritise them. Since paid work and I have been ‘on a break’, I’ve been challenging myself to be creative in new ways, read more books and share my family stories with people who understand (I hope)!

Here’s my blog. It’s cheaper than therapy.

“I find that there are many gifts in this space of quiet pausing between who I was and who I will become.” (From Buddhism for Mothers by Sarah Napthali).

‘What’s writing really about? It’s trying to take fuller possession of the reality of your life – to attack it and get it under control.’ (Ted Hughes)

About me

Dr Lara Cain Gray is an academic, writer, librarian, curator and mother.  The order depends on the day.

She has held research and curatorial positions at the British Library, the Queensland Museum, Queensland University of Technology and the University of Queensland. She has also been a check-out chick, a fairy floss maker and a Wilderness Society koala (yes, in the full furry suit).

She enjoys writing social commentary, book reviews, travel tales and therapeutic ravings about being a parent.   Her work has been published in the Queensland Historical AtlasQueensland Review, the Australian Library Journal and Social Alternatives, among other places.

She is taking a break from full time work to look after her beautiful, maddening offspring, but can be contacted for freelance writing opportunities.
